When choosing a shape for an engagement ring or a wedding anniversary gift, you might want to consider the pear shape.

Pear Diamond Rings feature a diamond that is round towards one end and a point at the other end.

This shape is also called a teardrop, but the term “pear shape” is preferred, since tears are often associated with sadness – not a good thing when talking about weddings and engagements.

The pear shape is actually a hybrid of two popular gem cuts: the brilliant and the marquise.  The brilliant cut is round when viewed from the top-down, while the marquise is a pointed ellipse when viewed in the same way.  The brilliant lends the round half to the pear, and the marquise lends its taper and one point to the other half of the pear.

The result is a combination of the two’s best characteristics: the brilliant’s fire and the marquise’s carat maximizing quality.

This type of diamond makes it a great choice for a pendant’s centerpiece or for drop earrings, but it works equally well in rings.  Though there are many solitaire rings featuring the pear cut, more often than not you will find this beauty as part of multi-stone settings.

Say you have a large pear diamond in the center, set perpendicular to the band, and with two smaller pear diamonds set along the length of the band; the result is a butterfly or dragonfly-like appearance.

Additionally, other gemstones like emeralds and Mikimoto pearls are often set alongside the pear diamond.  Mikimoto pearls are cultured pearls, and are actually made by oysters in the natural way, save for the inserted spherical pearl seed.

As with other diamonds, Pear Engagement Rings often come with a certificate.  This certificate details the specifications of the gem, from individual sizes to origin of the gem.

This certificate is not an appraisal though, and will not include the price, which is up to the retailers and big companies  to decide.

Sadly, the certificate is not a guarantee that you will get a perfect pear or teardrop shape.  In fact, there are two main problems that plague pear diamonds.  Fortunately, both of these defects are immediately apparent, their obviousness making it easier for the consumer.  In any case, make sure to buy pear diamonds from companies with excellent return policies, just to be sure.

The first problem is unevenness of the shape.

It is possible that the round end is not quite semi-circular.  This lopsidedness is often the result of cutters trying to make the most of the natural shape and weight of the diamond.  The pointy end could also not be as pointy, since this can also be rounded out to keep the carat count high.

The other problem is the so-called bowtie effect.  This is an effect of the way the light is reflected within the gem.  Because of the shape, the portion that would be the center in a round diamond might have a roughly symmetrical dark spot that looks like a bowtie.  This one can be seen even in normal light, and mars the beauty of the gem.

The pear diamond has a sophisticated air about it.  Not only does it look good, it also has a slight slimming effect on the look of the fingers.  Of course, the challenge of finding a diamond ring to buy at the best price remains.  Diamonds are never cheap, but they can be more affordable, depending on which shop you choose to buy from.  Some companies allow you to order online, and often provide preview photos.  Of course, be wary against fraud and scams when making your purchase this way.

In the end, a Pear Diamond Ring is a diamond ring, and diamonds are symbols of lasting love and commitment.  Sometimes it is not about the price but instead about the statement that you are making by buying one of these.  Commemorate your love with the fire and brilliance of a diamond ring!
